Life and death
Fransje Killaars
August 16 - September 20, 2026
Fransje Killaars is fascinated and deeply moved by the power and effect of color. Textiles and color are the primary media in her installations. She attempts to create an image that defies description and gives the space a new experience and meaning.
Textiles are tangible. The use of textiles as a carrier of color in installations adds a sensory layer to the space, suggesting a connection to our daily lives and linking painting, architecture, and fashion in a very natural way.
People, both mentally and physically, are always central to her concept. In her installations, she uses textiles in a very simple way, just as they are used in everyday life. Fransje Killaars often uses hand-woven carpets of her own design, blankets over a bed, fabric on walls and, recently, those same blankets draped over a human figure.
Objects that she also employs as artistic objects. The use of textiles in installations in such a familiar way invites visitors to enter and recognize the space, to experience it anew, and to give it new meaning.
The use of textiles to introduce color into an installation can evoke intimate associations. Such a space reflects a personal desire for well-being. She is always in search of a new image and, with it, new experiences and meanings in art. Images that you might not know, but that touch you and allow you to escape from daily reality for a moment.
In 1997, Fransje Killaars created a book of fabric samples. Shortly thereafter, she began applying them directly to walls, often in public spaces. The first time she attached pieces of fabric directly to the wall was in 2000, commissioned by the Fonds BKVB in Amsterdam. In recent years, she has alternated commissioned public art projects with autonomous installations.
In addition to her palette of primarily bright, fluorescent colors, she has also introduced another palette: one consisting more of composite shades and motifs printed on fabric. With this, she attempts to explore the effect of color and pattern on an image, and the role that color plays in shaping that image, alongside the use of textiles in her installations.
