Soundbathing on June 1st

Soundbathing with Herman van den Muijsenberg

On June 1st we will immerse ourselves in a bath of sounds. In this listening session we will hear underwater and learn about Deep Listening.

Sunday 1 June - 2:00 PM: Herman van den Muijsenberg

Herman van den Muijsenberg is a curator and artist who works with sound. With his sound sculptures, Herman explores the many ways in which people - but also other life forms - can listen. Herman collects sound and then composes new sonic landscapes with it. In these, underexposed voices are amplified or you hear material whose sounds you did not know yet.

His work was heard at the World Expo in Osaka this year. With collective Verstrengeld he investigates the many relationships between humans and seaweed. This research group was part of Into the Great Wide Open on Vlieland last year.

Herman is researching the relationship between sound and water. In 2024 he curated an exhibition on this subject and since then it has been flowing in this area. At iCOON we listen together to a combination of examples from art history and a selection of his own field recordings. What does an underwater landscape sound like? And why do familiar sounds sound very different underwater than you expect? Does seaweed make sound?

Herman brings a number of sound objects for a mini-concert.

ROOM FOR STUDIO NORALIE runs from May 17 to June 15, 2025.
