ROOM FOR MASSIMO PAVAN

5 April - 11 May 2025

Massimo Pavan is a ceramic designer, Italian born, based in Rotterdam. At iCOON he is presenting: autonomous installations with ceramic vessels, porcelain columns and small commercial objects. Impressed by the beauty of iCOON’s minimalistic empty space, Massimo created subtle installations, barely touching the building. On the contrary Inviting visitors to touch the perfection of his craftsmanship.

He focuses on basic geometric shapes in clay, using repetition and scale to explore and emphasize their forms. Repetition exaggerates the presence of each shape, allowing small variations to appear over time. By repeating the same form, he creates a rhythm that highlights subtle changes and builds a visual language that evolves with each piece. The challenge in working with repetition in clay lies in the material's responsiveness—it shifts and changes with each touch, adding an unpredictable element to the process.

Scale is also exaggerated to shift how the shapes are perceived. By enlarging them, he draws attention to their simple, abstract structure and creates a stronger visual impact. The challenge of working at this scale with clay lies in the material's weight, form, and gravity—the larger the piece, the more the medium itself resists the intended abstraction.
Together, the exaggeration of repetition and scale transforms these basic forms, making them more engaging and encouraging a deeper look at their simplicity and structure, all while embracing the challenges posed by the unique qualities of clay.
